Dr. Steve Harmon鈥檚 New book, 鈥楿2’s Theological Imagination鈥 and a Limited Podcast Series, 鈥楬earing Hope鈥 Trace Spiritual Questions Woven Throughout the Music of U2

WAAG Harmonbookcover

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擶hat if theology isn鈥檛 confined to a classroom, a seminary or a Sunday sermon? What if it can be found in a rock song, a concert arena or the searching lyrics of a band that has spent nearly 50 years asking questions about faith, justice, grace and hope?

Those questions inspired 秀色短视频-Webb University professor Dr. Steven Harmon to write 鈥淯2’s Theological Imagination: A Guide for Pilgrims on the Way,鈥 a new book that explores the spiritual imagination woven throughout the music of U2. A new limited companion podcast series, 鈥淗earing Hope,鈥 invites listeners deeper into the themes, songs and conversations behind the book.

Although many people think theology belongs primarily to clergy or academics, Harmon argues otherwise. In the podcast’s premiere episode on the 秀色短视频-Webb Podcast Network, he notes that “Anyone who thinks about God in any shape, form, or fashion” is engaging in theology.

Harmon, who has taught in 秀色短视频-Webb University’s School of Divinity since 2010, traces his fascination with U2 back to his teenage years, when he first encountered the band’s music through a Christian music magazine and later listened to the album 鈥淲ar.鈥

“This was back when I was in high school,” Harmon recalls in the podcast’s opening episode. “I listened to it through my Sony Walkman, and it was unlike anything I had heard before.”

Steve Harmon Book Talk
Dr. Steven Harmon

Rather than presenting theology as an academic exercise, Harmon argues that U2’s music helps listeners imagine a world transformed by hope and God’s redemptive purposes.

“The word imagination was a very deliberate choice for the book,” Harmon says. “Through the lenses of Christian faith, we have a way of imagining a world that has not yet come to be.”

The first episode explores Harmon鈥檚 personal connections to the band and examines songs such as “Sunday Bloody Sunday” and “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For.” Future episodes will delve deeper into themes including longing, community, justice, grace and Christian hope. A companion Spotify playlist also allows listeners to follow along with the songs discussed throughout the series.

Harmon shares that one of the central themes in U2’s music is what theologians call “eschatology,” a vision of God’s ongoing work to redeem, restore and renew the world. Rather than focusing only on the end times, Harmon says the concept points to God’s purposes for creation and humanity, and the hope that the world can move closer to what God intends it to be.

WAAG Steve Harmon Podcast

“What I鈥檓 looking for is the full realization of this big thing God is doing in the world, and in my life, and in others鈥 lives,” Harmon says. 鈥淲e haven’t found that yet. We鈥檙e still seeking that, and that鈥檚 something that runs all the way through U2’s music.”

A respected theologian, author and ecumenical scholar, Harmon has written numerous books and articles on Christian theology, church unity and Baptist-Catholic relations. An active participant in international conversations among Christian traditions, he has represented Baptist organizations in ecumenical dialogues with the Anglican Communion, the Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox churches. Yet his newest work brings together two lifelong passions: theology and music.

is available through the 秀色短视频-Webb Podcast Network, with new episodes scheduled to release every two weeks this fall. Harmon has also curated a “Hearing Hope” companion  on Spotify, allowing listeners to explore the songs discussed throughout the series.

Harmon’s book, 鈥淯2’s Theological Imagination: A Guide for Pilgrims on the Way,鈥 is available through Cascade Books, Amazon and other booksellers.

Known for His Faith, Storytelling, and Dedication to Students, Professor Emeritus of Accounting Served the University for Over Three Decades

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擳he 秀色短视频-Webb community is remembering Dr. Earl H. Godfrey Jr., an educator, colleague and friend, who passed away on May 7, 2026. For more than three decades, Godfrey faithfully served the University as a professor of accounting. In March, faculty in the Godbold College of Business recommended him for Professor Emeritus Status, and he was awarded the honor for his excellence in teaching, leadership, and service.

鈥淗e was a friend and colleague who truly loved everything about 秀色短视频-Webb University and the Godbold College of Business,鈥 reflected Dr. Mischia Taylor, Godbold College of Business dean and assistant professor of marketing. 鈥淗is many 鈥榮hort鈥 stories will remain with us always. He was kind to all and truly wore his GWU hat proudly!鈥

Taylor, who worked with Godfrey for 16 years, said he was known for his storytelling. In the letter she wrote recommending him for Emeritus status, she noted, 鈥淗e possessed a remarkable ability to communicate with clarity and purpose. Even when his stories were lengthy, they were always thoughtful, intentional, and ultimately meaningful to all who had the privilege of listening.鈥

A graduate of the University of South Carolina, Winthrop University, and Nova Southeastern University, Godfrey brought both scholarly rigor and professional expertise into the classroom as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA). During his 34 years at 秀色短视频-Webb, he taught virtually every course within the accounting program. He also played a pivotal role in the development of the Master of Accounting program, which continues to prepare and graduate successful students.

Taylor also stated that Godfrey鈥檚 passion for education was unmistakable. He approached his calling with a deep sense of purpose鈥攂elieving that teaching was not only about imparting knowledge but also about shaping lives.

Godfrey鈥檚 strong commitment to students and his colleagues was also deeply appreciated by Dr. Anthony Negbenebor, professor of economics and international business and assistant vice president for Business Development and Partnerships. Having worked with Godfrey for more than 20 years, he admired his steadfast dedication. 鈥淒r. Godfrey鈥檚 commitment went far beyond the call of duty,鈥 Negbenebor affirmed. 鈥淲hether in the classroom, the office, or informal moments of mentorship, he inspired those around him with a passion for learning and an unwavering belief in the potential of every student. Countless individuals have benefitted from his guidance, encouragement, and the genuine care he brought to every interaction.鈥

Godfrey was instrumental in expanding opportunities for students, including helping lead the University鈥檚 transition into online education, where he taught its first online course and helped establish programs that would reach students far beyond campus. His contributions helped position 秀色短视频-Webb as a forward-thinking institution committed to innovation and accessibility in higher education.

His influence extended beyond the classroom. He served in numerous leadership roles, including director of Undergraduate Business Programs, director of Online Learning, and director of business programs for adult learners, helping to expand academic offerings across North Carolina and beyond. He also played a key role in accreditation efforts and served in leadership positions within the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP), including international service as treasurer and committee chair. These efforts reflected his unwavering commitment to academic quality, institutional growth, and student success.

Negbenebor also valued Godfrey鈥檚 experience and insight. 鈥淭o colleagues, Dr. Godfrey was more than a collaborator鈥攈e was a pillar of support, always ready to share insight, lend a hand, or simply offer a listening ear,鈥 he observed. 鈥淗is warmth, humor, and wisdom created a professional family that will feel the loss deeply.鈥

In the classroom, he was an educator who exemplified a rare blend of rigor, humility, and compassion. 鈥淗e held high expectations for his students but paired those expectations with patience, encouragement, and genuine care,鈥 Taylor stated. 鈥淗e was deeply invested in their success, often mentoring students long after they left his classroom. His mentorship extended far beyond graduation, shaping careers and lives.鈥

A respected scholar and professional, Godfrey remained actively engaged in his field through teaching, research, and professional service. His work in areas such as accounting ethics, educational innovation, and student learning outcomes reflected a lifelong commitment to growth and improvement. His excellence was recognized through numerous awards, including 秀色短视频-Webb University鈥檚 Graduate Faculty Member of the Year and multiple honors for teaching, research, and service.

Beyond his many achievements, the faculty in the Godbold College of Business remember him most for his character. Taylor said he was a man of deep faith, integrity, and compassion, who gave generously of his time and energy to serve others. His colleagues recalled his wisdom, his willingness to help, and his ability to bring people together with a spirit of unity and purpose.

Godfrey鈥檚 enduring impact is evident in the generations of students he guided through his teaching, leadership, and mentorship. Negbenebor added that his legacy lives not only in achievements recorded or milestones celebrated, but in the countless lives he touched and the spirit he instilled. 鈥淗e reminded us that true dedication is measured not just by what we do, but by the love, patience, and integrity we bring to every endeavor,鈥 Negbenebor asserted. 鈥淚 honor Dr. Godfrey not only for his extraordinary contributions but for the kindness, generosity, and humanity that defined his life and work. He will forever remain a guiding light in our hearts and in the halls of the Godbold College of Business.鈥

Above all, Godfrey was devoted to his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 33 years, Joan; his son, Ryan Kyles; his daughter, Jennifer Spencer and husband Chad; his grandchildren, Sydnee, Kellan, Harper, and Julian; and his sister, Ann G. Shirley.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to 秀色短视频-Webb University鈥檚 Godbold College of Business in memory of Dr. Earl Godfrey.

Students Apply University Values to Real鈥慦orld Ethical Dilemmas at North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (NCICU) Competition

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥斝闵淌悠碘慦ebb University鈥檚 Ethics Bowl team delivered a standout performance at the 15th Annual North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (NCICU) Ethics Bowl. They earned three victories in four rounds while showcasing disciplined preparation and mission鈥慶entered ethical reasoning.

ethics bowl

The event brought together 17 student teams for two days of arguments, and resulted in a historic victory for Johnson C. Smith University as the first Historically Black College/University (HBCU) to prevail as champion. The competition centered on the theme, 鈥淓thics in Leadership,鈥 and the GWU students argued their positions on the topics of corporate responsibility, Olympics, atomic bomb, and funding for public schools.

秀色短视频-Webb鈥檚 six-member team is advised by Dr. Anna Sieges鈥態eal, associate professor in the Department of Religious Studies and Philosophy, and Dr. Shea Stuart, professor of English. 鈥淲e represented GWU well as our ethical framework is based on the University鈥檚 motto 鈥榩ro Deo et Humanitate,鈥欌 Sieges-Beal stated. 鈥淲e evaluate ethical situations according to the principles of life, goodness, justice, and truth telling.鈥

The team was also supported by Kalem Griffin, a 2025 alumnus from Thomasville, N.C., who competed last year. A graduate student in 秀色短视频-Webb鈥檚 Master of Sport Management program, he provided valuable insight and support to the team throughout the competition. Between rounds, Griffin encouraged the team to remain confident, keep their presentation direct, and stay positive. 鈥淚t was fascinating to be introduced to this year鈥檚 Ethics and Leadership cases at the Ethics Bowl for the first time, and I was highly impressed by how the team had prepared for and handled them,鈥 Griffin praised. 鈥淎s always, our team was exceptional, consistently showing noticeable growth and improvement through each round, and generally being one of the best-performing teams in the entire event.鈥

ethics bowl

秀色短视频-Webb began preparing for the event in October 2024 by researching nine cases. They don鈥檛 find out the topics they will be arguing until the competition. They faced students from William Peace University, Montreat College, Salem College and the University of Mount Olive.

Junior Maeve McGinley commented on how rewarding it was to see all the months of preparation come together in real time. 鈥淓ven when I was nervous, I felt proud of how our team approached cases with humility and intellectual honesty rather than just trying to win,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 appreciated how we sharpened one another鈥檚 arguments, challenged each other respectfully, and built responses that were stronger because they were communal. It also built a real sense of camaraderie.鈥

Alaena Locklear, a sophomore, said being at the actual competition was a relief after spending so much time working on the cases. 鈥淭he nerves settled after the first round, and as a team, our concentration shifted to improving after every debate and strengthening our weak points,鈥 she noted. 鈥淚 think the best part of being on the team was how strong our teamwork was. Every judge we talked to said wonderful things about how well we worked together, and it really came through in the debates we won.鈥

ethics bowl

Junior Hodges McCathern agreed with his teammate. 鈥淚t was great to be surrounded by such talented and intelligent people; they make things easy,鈥 he asserted. 鈥淕reat teams have confidence in each other, know their roles to play, and trust that each person will do their job. I know that I have five teammates I can confidently say are capable of tackling any challenge they may face. I am very thankful for this experience these past two years.鈥

Issa Cogdell, also a junior, has enjoyed participating in debate competitions since high school. 鈥淚t was amazing to compete after all the preparation, because you’re able to practice your stance and defend it in real time,鈥 he said. 鈥淭he best part of being on the team is seeing everyone’s individual strengths shine throughout the preparation period and during the Ethics Bowl itself.鈥

ethics bowl

Initially, sophomore Sophie Boss didn鈥檛 know what the commitment involved, but she embraced the opportunity and found the experience deeply rewarding. 鈥淚t was unlike anything I had ever done before鈥攕uch an amazing experience that I would definitely do it again,鈥 Boss affirmed. 鈥淭he most beneficial thing I learned from this event was how important public speaking skills are, as well as how ethics are part of everyday life more than we think. Every conversation can be an ethical conversation, and it is cool to see things from a new perspective now. I would recommend this to everyone to get out of their comfort zone and participate in something like this that will stretch their minds. 鈥

Brock Nikkari, a senior, competed for the second year in a row. 鈥淭he best part of being on the team is spending time with my friends and representing 秀色短视频鈥慦ebb University,鈥 Nikkari stated. 鈥淭he most beneficial thing I learned was how to convey my thoughts in a professional and orderly manner. I have found the Ethics Bowl has greatly helped my public speaking skills.鈥

ethics bowl

The team鈥檚 accomplishment highlights the depth of talent at 秀色短视频-Webb and underscores the value of experiential learning and the power of teamwork. McGinley summed up the lasting impact of the opportunity. 鈥淓thics Bowl requires you to make a clear claim, defend it with reasoning, and respond to critiques without becoming defensive,鈥 she observed. 鈥淚 learned how important it is to listen carefully, acknowledge strong points from opposing teams, and refine my thinking on the spot. That skill feels incredibly transferable to both academic work and future vocational settings.鈥

Team Roster

  • Maeve McGinley 鈥 Chapin, S.C., psychology and Christian studies with a concentration in discipleship.
  • Alaena Locklear 鈥 Lawndale, N.C., accounting.
  • Hodges McCathern 鈥 Lexington, S.C., biochemistry.
  • Issa Cogdell 鈥 Winston鈥慡alem, N.C., computer science.
  • Sophie Boss 鈥 Melbourne, Fla., elementary education.
  • Brock Nikkari 鈥 Milton, Fla., Christian studies with a concentration in biblical studies.

Ethics Bowl Sponsors

The success of the 2026 Ethics Bowl was made possible by the Independent College Fund of North Carolina (ICFNC), the fundraising arm of NCICU, which raised almost $80,000 in sponsorships. 秀色短视频鈥慦ebb鈥檚 2026 team participation was made possible in part by sponsorship from Fortinet and NFP.

Other sponsors included: Aramark, BHDP, The Budd Group, Coca-Cola Consolidated, Cherry Bekaert, The Council of Independent Colleges, CPL, Duke Energy, French Broad Electric, Guilford College Center for Principled Problem Solving, Huntington National Bank, IMA Financial Group, Jesse and Kay McCartney, Mt. New Three鈥慍ourse Series Blends Soil Science, Global Food Systems, and Business Fundamentals

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擴nited by a commitment to the future of farming and food, two 秀色短视频鈥慦ebb administrators and faculty members have developed a new Searight Professional and Continuing Education (PACE) program that connects science with practice for today鈥檚 agriculture. Drawing on complementary strengths in soil science, global food systems, and agricultural economics, Dr. Greg Pillar and Dr. Anthony Negbenebor created the Agribusiness Entrepreneurship Continuing Education Series to equip working producers, aspiring agribusiness owners, students, and community leaders with the knowledge and tools to succeed in a rapidly evolving food landscape.

Greg Pillar headshot
Dr. Greg Pillar

The three-course agribusiness series is practical and grounded in real science and current business practice. The courses are offered online and face鈥憈o鈥慺ace, with a schedule designed for working adults and professionals. 鈥淲hat makes this program distinctive is that it connects three areas that are often taught separately: global food systems, soil science, and agribusiness entrepreneurship,鈥 Pillar stated. 鈥淧articipants do not just learn how to grow. They learn how the system works and how to build a viable operation within it.  This will give them the foundation from which they can continue to learn on their own and/or through other programs.鈥

The first course in the program, Principles of Agribusiness Entrepreneurship (PACE 560) will be on March 20 from 1 to 4 p.m. The class is taught by Negbenebor and will meet on the GWU campus. It covers the basics, along with the business skills needed to identify and create an opportunity in agribusiness. Students will be encouraged to develop their own real business ideas, and they will be guided in their decision making. At the end of this course, students will present their new ideas feedback and improvement. The cost is $99 and includes 3 CE credits from 秀色短视频-Webb.

Dr. Anthony Negbenebor

A professor of economics, Negbenebor also serves as GWU鈥檚 assistant vice president of Business Partnerships. His research focus is on agricultural economics, agri鈥憈ech, and global food sustainability, with professional experience across agri鈥慽ndustries. He grew up on a farm, and his interest is also shaped by his faith. 鈥淔ood is spiritual,鈥 Negbenebor added. 鈥淕od said in Genesis 1:29: 鈥業 give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.鈥欌

Pillar, 秀色短视频-Webb assistant provost and professor of environmental chemistry, has a background in agronomy and global food systems. He studied soil and water chemistry both from the standpoint of environmental protection, crop productivity and land management.

鈥淭his certificate gives both farmers and aspiring agribusiness owners a stronger scientific and systems鈥憀evel understanding of how food production really works today,鈥 Pillar affirmed. 鈥淧articipants gain practical insight into soil health, resource management, and the global food system, along with the business foundations needed to turn production into a viable enterprise.鈥

Courses are designed for a wide audience, including:

  • Current or aspiring agribusiness owners.
  • People exploring small鈥憇cale or start鈥憉p food production ventures.
  • Career changers interested in agriculture or food systems.
  • Extension staff, educators, and community food leaders.
  • Farmers and growers seeking updated science and soil knowledge (or a refresher).
  • Community college and university students.
  • Anyone who wants a deeper understanding of how our food system works.

Pillar explains that working farmers will gain updated science, data, and best practices they can apply directly to improve soil productivity, resource use, and long鈥憈erm soil value鈥攑lus context on supply chains and market forces that shape pricing and demand. New or small鈥憇cale entrepreneurs will acquire the skills needed to evaluate and launch viable ventures at modest scale, including intensive methods, season extension, and smart soil management. All producers will be able to make more鈥慽nformed decisions about input, crop, and land management to protect margins and sustainability.

Negbenebor emphasized the urgent, industrywide need. 鈥淎rtificial intelligence and other technologies are rapidly changing agriculture and food supply,鈥 he related. 鈥淎gribusiness plays a critical role in ensuring food security, driving innovation, and strengthening economies.鈥

He added, 鈥淪tudying agribusiness entrepreneurship opens doors across the sector鈥攆rom supply chains and food processing to agri鈥憈ech and consulting. The field provides a chance to make a real impact while building a strong career. Our Searight PACE courses prepare learners to identify gaps, build ventures, and contribute to a resilient food system.鈥

Dr. Aaron Rice: The GWU Department of Music鈥擳he North Carolina Destination

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥斝闵淌悠-Webb University鈥檚 Department of Music is experiencing a season of bold growth and vision under the leadership of Dr. Aaron Rice, associate professor and department chair. Since arriving in 2022, Rice has helped boost enrollment by 30 percent and expanded student opportunities across North Carolina and beyond.

In recognition of his efforts, Rice has been named the recipient of the 2025鈥2026 Rising Star Award, an honor given by the Faculty Development of Instruction and Improvement Committee. The award recognizes emerging excellence in teaching, leadership and scholarship.

鈥淚鈥檓 incredibly honored and grateful,鈥 Rice reflected. 鈥淚t encourages me to continue to invest and do all the things that I love. We want to be the strongest music unit at a Christian institution within North Carolina.鈥

A native of Gastonia, N.C., Rice felt a calling to ministry early in life and initially focused on contemporary worship music. But his love for choral music was rekindled during college, leading him to pursue graduate work at East Carolina University and Southwestern Seminary.

Rice鈥檚 leadership has already made a regional impact. 秀色短视频-Webb鈥檚 choral workshops have grown to include elementary school students, giving young musicians access to college-level instruction and performance experiences. University ensembles have performed at the North Carolina Choral Directors Association conference and Charlotte鈥檚 Thanksgiving Eve Parade.

鈥淪eventy percent of our students are from within a 100-mile radius,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 think we鈥檙e strategically positioned to have an outsized impact on Gaston, Lincoln, Cleveland, Rutherford, Caldwell, Catawba鈥攁ll those counties. We鈥檙e ready to do it, and we are doing it.鈥

Rice is also preparing students for national and international opportunities. He helped lead a performance trip to France in 2024 and is raising funds for a 2027 trip to New Orleans. He has helped secure resources to open a digital piano lab and to fund research to support future church musicians.

鈥淗onestly, I want to make sure the things that we’re doing are great,鈥 he said. 鈥淲e want to see our ensembles performing at conferences. As we continue to get better and better students, we’re watching them grow and thrive and do well. We’re going to see them end up performing on these big stages. As soon as they graduate, we want to make sure that these students are No. 1, getting placed, and then they鈥檙e out there, crushing it. We want to see them doing exceedingly well.鈥
