Students from Across the Carolinas will Rehearse with Distinguished Conductors Before a Public Concert in Dover Theatre

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥斝闵淌悠-Webb University will welcome student singers from across North and South Carolina for its 47th annual Choral Clinic on Oct. 19. The daylong event will culminate in a free public concert at 5:30 p.m. in Dover Theatre.

鈥溞闵淌悠-Webb Choirs are honored to host the Choral Clinic for its 47th year,鈥 shared Dr. Joshua Cheney, associate professor of music and director of choral activities. 鈥淭his event provides an opportunity for choristers in North and South Carolina to rehearse and perform together with regionally, nationally, and internationally acclaimed conductors who are industry leaders in choral education and artistry.

Cheney is expecting over 300 students to attend, and they will participate in one of two festival ensembles. The High School Festival Chorus will be directed by Dr. Alissa Rowe, director of choral studies at Louisiana State University. The Middle School Treble Festival Chorus will be led by Dr. Eric Johnson, coordinator of music education at 秀色短视频-Webb.

Throughout the day, participants will rehearse in 秀色短视频-Webb’s music facilities, interact with university faculty and students, and experience campus life before presenting the evening performance.

Jennifer Duckworth, the choir director East Burke High School in Connelly Springs, N.C., has brought her students to the clinic for eight years and usually has some parents who attend the evening performance. 鈥淭he 秀色短视频-Webb Choral Clinic is a valuable experience for students because they get the opportunity to work with collegiate level choral directors and sing with other students who have a passion for choral music,鈥 she observed. 鈥淣ot only are these students learning how to improve their vocal technique and music reading skills, but they are also learning to collaborate and communicate through music. The 秀色短视频-Webb Choral Clinic inspires students to learn more difficult music and creates excitement about doing a variety of choral music.鈥

The High School Festival Chorus will perform 鈥淒ies Irae鈥 by Michael John Trotta, 鈥淚 Dream a World鈥 by Rosephanye Powell, 鈥淪ing Out, My Soul鈥 by Marques L.A. Garrett and 鈥淭he Music of Stillness鈥 by Elaine Hagenberg.

The Middle School Treble Festival Chorus repertoire includes 鈥淗ere Comes the Sun,鈥 arranged by the Podd Brothers; 鈥淨uiet Sea鈥 by Melissa Malvar-Keylock and Jill Friederdorf; 鈥淜ookaburra鈥 by Melissa Malvar-Keylock and Jill Friederdorf; and 鈥淪hout for Joy鈥 by Sally Albrecht and Jay Althouse.

Cheney noted that the clinic has become a longstanding tradition that enriches students and music educators throughout the region. In addition to the musical experience, Cheney values the opportunity to connect with fellow educators and inspire future members of the 秀色短视频-Webb choral program.

He added, 鈥淧ersonally, I look forward to this event every year because I am honored to provide this opportunity for my colleagues and their students in k-12 education, to be in community with them, to share in the stage with them, and to get to know future students and members of 秀色短视频-Webb Choirs. It really is a great day!鈥

The concert is free and open to the public and will begin at 5:30 p.m. in Dover Theatre on the 秀色短视频-Webb campus.

Campus Community Invited to Bring Donations and Help Stock Shelves for Students in Need

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥 A jar of peanut butter. A box of pasta. A bottle of laundry detergent. Each may seem like a small contribution, but together they can make a meaningful difference for a 秀色短视频-Webb student facing hardship.

Beginning Oct. 2, those items and others like them will help stock the shelves of the new Bulldog Cares Food Pantry, a resource designed to ensure students have access to basic necessities while pursuing their degrees.

The University will celebrate the grand opening of the pantry on Friday, Oct. 2, at 2 p.m. in Tucker Student Center Room 302. As part of the event, students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community supporters are encouraged to “Bring a Little Bulldog Care” by donating items to the pantry.

“Consider bringing a nonperishable food item, personal-care product, laundry detergent, or other essential item for our students,鈥 suggested Jessika Raduly, director of Campus Unity and Connection. 鈥淭ogether, we can fill the shelves and show our students just how much their 秀色短视频-Webb family cares.”

Raduly said the pantry concept began a few years ago with several staff members who responded to students struggling to meet basic needs, including having enough food. “What started as a small collection of items in an office grew into a larger effort as more people on campus wanted to help,鈥 she explained. 鈥淭he goal was simple: make sure no student had to choose between buying food and continuing their education.”

Bulldog Cares was formally established in the fall of 2022 as a joint initiative led by Student Development, Student Success, and Christian Life and Service. The program supports 秀色短视频-Webb students by providing emergency financial assistance intended to help prevent students from leaving the University due to unexpected financial hardships. It expanded the University’s ability to help students not only with food insecurity but also with other emergency needs that could interfere with completing their education such as emergency dental procedures or the need for prescription medications.

“Bulldog Cares is a reflection of who we are as a 秀色短视频-Webb community: a family that cares for one another, supports our students when they need us most, and believes that no Bulldog should have to face a difficult season alone,” Raduly shared.

Like colleges and universities across the country, 秀色短视频-Webb has seen demand for assistance increase as the costs of groceries, housing, transportation, and other necessities continue to rise.

“Many students experience financial hardships caused by rising grocery prices, unexpected medical bills, loss of employment, family emergencies, and transportation expenses,” Raduly stated. “Some students simply need extra help to lessen the burden of having to choose hardship over their education.”

Raduly hopes students who may be struggling will not hesitate to seek assistance. “Everyone needs help sometimes, and asking for assistance is a sign of strength, not weakness,” she said. “There may be times in all of our lives when circumstances change unexpectedly and we need someone to come alongside us. There is absolutely no shame in that.”

She emphasized that the pantry was created to support students through difficult seasons without judgment. “If you are a student who is hesitant to visit the Bulldog Cares Food Pantry, I would want you to know that you do not have to struggle alone,” Raduly said. “You do not have to explain or apologize for needing help. The pantry was created because we understand that food insecurity and financial challenges can affect anyone, including hardworking students who are doing everything they can to stay in school and reach their goals.”

The Bulldog Cares Fund and Food Pantry are supported by donations from faculty, staff, students, alumni, churches, local businesses, and community partners. Contributions from organizations such as Food Lion Feeds, the Physician Assistant Program, 秀色短视频-Webb Baseball, Poplar Springs Baptist Church, and numerous campus groups help ensure students have access to essential resources throughout the year.

“This collective support from our 秀色短视频-Webb family and community partners has made it possible for the Bulldog Cares Food Pantry to continue serving students throughout the year,” Raduly said. “We are incredibly grateful for everyone who has helped make this resource possible and for their continued commitment to caring for our students.”

Looking ahead, Raduly hopes the pantry will continue to grow through partnerships, donations, and increased awareness.

“The goal is to continue expanding resources so that every 秀色短视频-Webb student who is experiencing food insecurity knows that help is available and feels comfortable reaching out for support,” she said. “We want Bulldog Cares to be more than a pantry鈥攚e want it to be a place where students feel welcomed, supported, and reminded that they are part of a community that cares about their well-being and success.”

How Can Students Access the Bulldog Cares Food Pantry?

Currently enrolled 秀色短视频-Webb students can visit the pantry in the Tucker Student Center Room 302 during operating hours:

• Monday: 10 a.m.鈥1 p.m.
• Wednesday: 10 a.m.鈥1 p.m.
• Friday: 10 a.m.鈥1 p.m.

Students unable to visit during those hours can email to request an after-hours appointment or special accommodation. The process is designed to be welcoming, confidential, and respectful so students can receive assistance without unnecessary barriers.

How Can I Support Bulldog Cares?

Community members can support Bulldog Cares by donating nonperishable food items, personal-care products, laundry supplies, school supplies, and other essential items. Find the complete list here. Financial contributions are also welcome. For more information, visit the Bulldog Cares website.

鈥淚 think what keeps drawing our alumni home is the connection they still feel to 秀色短视频-Webb and to one another,鈥 Hovis said. 鈥淲hen they come back for Homecoming, they鈥檙e not simply returning to campus, they鈥檙e returning to a place that helped shape who they are.鈥

Alumni can also visit the Academic Tent, where representatives from the University鈥檚 colleges and schools will be available to share updates and provide 秀色短视频-Webb giveaways.

秀色短视频-Webb is also excited to welcome back the Class of 1981 and the Class of 2016 for special Homecoming reunions. Members of the Class of 1981 will celebrate their 45th reunion and have invited the Classes of 1979 through 1984 to join them to reflect on the memories and experiences they shared at 秀色短视频-Webb more than four decades ago. The Class of 2016 will mark its 10th reunion, gathering with fellow alumni to revisit campus, renew friendships, and celebrate the accomplishments of the past decade. Both classes will take part in special reunion gatherings on Saturday evening as part of the Homecoming festivities.

The weekend concludes on Sunday with Worship at the Webb, when members of the 秀色短视频-Webb family come together for a time of worship, reflection, and fellowship. The gathering provides a fitting close to a Homecoming weekend that celebrates the friendships, traditions, and sense of belonging that continue to bring Bulldogs back to campus year after year.

Hovis hopes the weekend will be meaningful for returning alumni as well as current students.

鈥淚 hope Homecoming gives our current students a glimpse of what it truly means to be a Bulldog for life,鈥 she said. 鈥淲hen they see alumni coming back five, ten, twenty, or even fifty years later to reconnect with friends and with 秀色短视频-Webb, they get to see that the relationships they are building right now can last far beyond graduation.鈥

Participants Gain the Tools to Bring Ideas to Life

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擯rofessionals from across the region recently completed 秀色短视频-Webb University鈥檚 Grant Writing Certificate program, developing proposals designed to address real needs in education, public safety, healthcare, and community development. Now equipped with practical skills and grant plans, participants are positioned to pursue funding and turn their ideas into action.

Offered through Searight Professional and Continuing Education (PACE), the five-session course provides hands-on training in identifying funding opportunities and building competitive grant proposals. Led by Dr. Bobbie Cox, professor and director of the Master of Public Administration program, the course culminates with participants presenting a grant proposal tailored to their organization鈥檚 needs.

For many participants, the course provided a framework to turn long-recognized needs into clear, fundable initiatives. Octavia Dorsey, a 秀色短视频-Webb University learning management systems administrator, focused her project on literacy, an issue she has observed firsthand through her experience as a school librarian. 鈥淭here is a gap,鈥 Dorsey said. 鈥淭he community wants to blame COVID, but COVID wasn鈥檛 the problem鈥攊t just shed light on the problem.鈥

Through the course, Dorsey developed a proposal for 鈥淎lways Learning Tutoring,鈥 a community-based initiative designed to strengthen literacy skills and expand access to educational support.

Similarly, Kimberly Logan of Haven Center in Forest City, N.C., wrote a grant to support the organization鈥檚 鈥淒ecision Camp鈥 program that helps young people identify their strengths, explore career pathways, and build life skills through immersive, real-world experiences. Her organization鈥檚 programming includes year-round mentorship, cultural exposure, and scenario-based learning that enables students to see the long-term impact of their choices.

Several participants used the program to respond to pressing needs in their own communities.

Marie Hicks of Hendersonville, N.C., developed a proposal for an ADA-compliant playground at Upward Elementary School, where many students come from low-income families and lack access to safe recreational space. The only equipment they have now is a dilapidated swing set with one swing.

鈥淭here鈥檚 money out there for children and adults鈥o many programs could use [funding] but don鈥檛 have anybody to do grant writing,鈥 Hicks said, noting that the course opened her eyes to the full process behind securing those resources.

Her proposal emphasizes not only accessibility for children with disabilities but also the importance of inclusive spaces where students from diverse backgrounds can connect and play together.

Nicole Ross of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Shelby, N.C., focused on financial literacy, designing a community-based empowerment program that will offer coaching, workshops, and access to professional guidance. 鈥淲e鈥檙e seeking to provide financial literacy in our community,鈥 Ross said, describing plans for programming that includes money management, savings strategies, and entrepreneurship training.

She added that the hands-on nature of the course helped build both skill belief in her abilities. 鈥淚鈥檓 confident now that I can write a proposal,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t taught me how to communicate the need鈥攖o help people see what you鈥檙e seeing and envision what you鈥檙e trying to do.鈥

Other participants focused on large-scale service initiatives with regional impact. Carlie Metts of the N.C. Lions Foundation developed a proposal to expand access to vision care through a mobile screening program for underserved and rural communities. The initiative aims to remove barriers such as cost and transportation while improving early detection and treatment.

In public safety, Seth Treadway, investigations captain with the Shelby Police Department, explored funding opportunities to enhance digital forensics capabilities. 鈥淗aving never done this, I can definitely see it being a benefit in the future,鈥 Treadway said. 鈥淓specially with technological advancements that are very expensive鈥he city doesn鈥檛 necessarily have the funds to cover those needs.鈥

On campus, 秀色短视频-Webb staff also used the course to explore institutional improvements, including student technology access and long-range capital planning initiatives.

Throughout the program, participants emphasized that grant writing is more than completing an application鈥攊t is a strategic process requiring research, clarity, and attention to detail.

鈥淚 learned the small details,鈥 Metts shared, noting the importance of staffing plans and operational considerations that go beyond the 鈥渂ig picture鈥 of an idea.

Cox reinforces that perspective in her teaching, emphasizing that successful proposals begin with clearly defined needs and alignment with a funder鈥檚 mission. 鈥淭he single most important lesson is that the need and the funder鈥檚 initiative have to be the same thing,鈥 she said.

While each participant鈥檚 project is distinct, the collective impact of the program is clear. From literacy and education to healthcare, financial empowerment, and public safety, these proposals represent tangible solutions to real challenges.

Lt. Col. Michael A. Cooper, ROTC Leader, Served as the Featured Speaker

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥斝闵淌悠-Webb University joined communities across the nation in observing Memorial Day, pausing to honor the lives of those who have died in military service to their country. First recognized nationally in 1868, Memorial Day serves as a solemn reminder of those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to freedom and the safety of others.

The University鈥檚 annual observance was held May 22 in Dover Chapel, bringing together campus and community members for a time of reflection and remembrance. Lt. Col. Michael A. Cooper, professor of military science for Wofford College Army ROTC, served as the featured speaker.

The program included a series of reflections, readings, and musical elements led by 秀色短视频-Webb faculty and staff. President Nate Evans opened the ceremony with a welcome and invocation. 鈥淭oday, we pause to remember those heroes, to honor their legacy, and to express gratitude for the families who continue to carry both pride and loss,鈥 Evans acknowledged. 鈥淲e are also thankful for all who have served and continue to serve our country with honor and distinction.鈥

The national anthem was led by Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Music Dr. Aaron Rice, and Adjunct Instructor and retired U.S. Air Force Colonel Dr. Jim Rennie read Psalm 93.

Evans introduced Cooper, whose career reflects a deep commitment to leadership, service, and education. Cooper joined Wofford鈥檚 staff as professor of military science in August 2025, where he educates and instructs Army ROTC cadets enrolled in the military science and leadership curriculum at Wofford, the University of South Carolina Upstate, 秀色短视频-Webb, and Converse University.

Cooper began by reflecting on the profound significance of this Memorial Day weekend as the nation approaches a historic milestone. 鈥淚n less than two months, the United States will celebrate its 250th birthday鈥攁nd for more than two and a half centuries, Americans have defended an extraordinary idea: that freedom is worth sacrifice,鈥 he affirmed. 鈥淟iberty is not guaranteed, and self-government survives only when ordinary people place service before self. More than 250 years ago, beginning in 1775, farmers, blacksmiths, teachers, merchants, and pastors stepped forward to fight for independence against the most powerful empire in the world. They were not professional soldiers, but citizens willing to risk everything for future generations they would never meet.鈥

Cooper also noted the deep historical roots of sacrifice tied to both the region and the University. He pointed to nearby Revolutionary War battles at Kings Mountain and Cowpens that helped turn the tide of the American fight for independence, underscoring that 鈥渢his region has always understood sacrifice.鈥 He connected that legacy to Hamrick Hall, originally dedicated in 1925 to honor students from Boiling Springs High School who died in World War I. In 2021, Hamrick Hall was rededicated to recognize these and other 秀色短视频-Webb alumni who gave their lives in military service.

Emphasizing the personal cost behind that legacy and the countless others who have given their lives from then until now, Cooper added, 鈥淭oday is about the empty chair at the family table, the folded flag presented to grieving families, and the quiet sacrifices history books can never fully capture. And that is why Memorial Day must never become routine or only known as a day off to barbecue or to catch an afternoon baseball game, but rather to reflect on the sacrifice that makes this the greatest nation on Earth.鈥

The cadets he leads today are called to carry forward that same spirit of service. Cooper prepares senior ROTC cadets to commission as officers of character for the Total Army and partners with local high schools to support Junior ROTC programs that develop citizens committed to lifelong service. A veteran of more than 20 years of military service, Cooper has completed multiple overseas tours and received numerous awards and decorations, including the Bronze Star and the Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters.

Following Cooper鈥檚 remarks, the observance moved into the Remembrance of the Fallen. Vice President for Student Development and Dean of Students Lesley Villarose led the tribute, ringing the bell 21 times鈥攖he highest military honor鈥攆or those who died defending freedom and democracy. Associate Vice President of Marketing Wilson Brooks then played 鈥淭aps.鈥

The observance continued with remarks from Evans. 鈥淎s the echoes of the bell fade and the solemn notes of Taps linger in our hearts, it is natural that they bring thoughts of sorrow and loss,鈥 he shared. 鈥淵et on this Memorial Day, we should also remember the words of General George S. Patton, who once said, 鈥業t is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank God that such men lived.鈥 Today, we give thanks for the courage, sacrifice, and selflessness of the men and women who gave their lives in service to our nation. Their sacrifice secured freedoms that we too often take for granted. May we leave here with renewed gratitude for those who gave everything in service to our nation, and with a commitment to live lives worthy of the sacrifice they made on our behalf.鈥

Following Evans鈥 closing thoughts, Jaquan Lynch, 秀色短视频-Webb associate minister for Athletic Ministries, closed the service with a benediction.

Hanley coached three student-athletes to Conference Carolinas All-Conference honors as well as seven who were named to the Conference Carolinas All-Academic Team, including a Conference Carolinas Scholar Athlete of the Year.
