Health Sciences Students Assist 秀色短视频-Webb Alumna the Rev. Frances Webber with Diabetes Education Program

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擣or the last six years, students from 秀色短视频-Webb University’s College of Health Sciences have stepped beyond the classroom and into communities across Cleveland County through a partnership with Washington Outreach Ministry (WOM). While physician assistant (PA) and nursing students gain practical healthcare experience, they also help support a community-based diabetes education program taught by certified facilitators.

College of Health Sciences Community Service

Dr. LaDonna Clark, director of clinical education and assistant professor in 秀色短视频-Webb’s PA Studies Program, recruited and supervises the group of PA and nursing students who participate in WOM’s eight-week Diabetes Education Maintenance and Control (DEMAC) program. Each week, students travel to Holly Oak Park in Shelby, N.C., to perform blood pressure screenings and weight checks for participants.

According to WOM co-founder and Executive Director the Rev. Frances Webber, the joint effort highlights how organizations can achieve greater impact when they work together to address health needs. “The best description I can give is collective impact,” Webber said. “The partnership closes the gap in making DEMAC a most effective healthcare tool.鈥

She created the diabetes education program for WOM after seeing the need for greater health education and support in marginalized and low-income communities. 鈥淲e have discovered that people will not go to get help for various reasons, but if you take the help to communities, it’s transformational,” Webber acknowledged.

As she developed the program, Webber received support from the Dover Foundation YMCA and Healthy Together Cleveland and sought guidance from a 秀色短视频-Webb nursing faculty member. “We had conversations about what I was trying to accomplish,” Webber related. “When people don’t have food that leads to health issues. I always think about Maslow’s hierarchy. Give me what I need here, if you want me to get there. I won’t get there if I don’t have food. Food insecurity is huge in Cleveland County.”

According to the North Carolina Department of Commerce, Cleveland County is designated as a Tier 1 county, placing it among North Carolina’s most economically distressed counties. Through partnerships with organizations including 秀色短视频-Webb, Cleveland Community College, Atrium Health and the Cleveland County Health Department, WOM addresses nutritional and health needs through education, outreach and direct assistance.

Webber and her husband, Lewis, founded WOM in 1995. She earned both a business administration degree and a Master of Divinity in Christian education from 秀色短视频-Webb University. Under her leadership, the nonprofit has grown into Cleveland County’s largest emergency food pantry and serves as the Food Hub for Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina/Feeding America.

Partnering with 20 hunger relief agencies, WOM distributes food to more than 16,000 clients each month with the assistance of volunteers at 13 churches across Cleveland County. The ministry also provides monthly food assistance to low-income senior adults through the Commodity Supplemental Food Program and offers additional food support through the Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP). More than 90 families from two elementary schools receive food through WOM’s backpack ministry, while the Summer Nutrition Program serves more than 3,500 meals to youth each year.

For the College of Health Sciences, the partnership offers students an opportunity to apply classroom knowledge while serving others. “When the call came from Dean Tracy Arnold to help support this incredible program, I immediately knew it was something we had to be involved in,” Clark said. “The mission of Washington Outreach Ministry closely aligns with our commitment to serving underserved communities and improving health outcomes through education and outreach.”

Clark said students gain firsthand exposure to the social and economic factors that influence health outcomes. “Experiences like DEMAC help students better understand these realities while they are still developing their clinical and professional identities,” she said. “They learn to provide patient-centered care, communicate effectively across diverse populations and appreciate the broader factors that influence health outcomes.”

College of Health Sciences Community Service
Dr. LaDonna Clark (in background), the director of clinical
education and assistant professor in 秀色短视频-Webb’s PA
Studies Program, coordinates the program for GWU.

The experience extends well beyond recording blood pressure and weight measurements. 鈥淭he students actually stay in class for the entire session,鈥 Webber said. “I strongly believe that the students are fully engaged in this portion of the DEMAC class, which is very educational.”

Clark said participation in the program helps students understand challenges related to healthcare access, transportation, food security and health literacy that they are likely to encounter throughout their careers. Exposure to underserved populations is especially important in a state where many counties face shortages of healthcare professionals.

During the first five weeks of the program, Clark has witnessed meaningful connections form between students and participants. “The interactions have been overwhelmingly positive, and there has been a genuine sense of connection and trust developing between participants and the healthcare students serving alongside them,” Clark said. “Students are learning how to meet people where they are and gaining a deeper understanding of the unique challenges many individuals face when managing chronic health conditions.”

The program has made an impact on Katie Bowyer, a PA student in the Class of 2028. “I have had the chance to learn so much about interacting with patients and educating them in real time about their blood pressure,” Bowyer said. “We have been able to discuss topics like diet, stress and exercise and how these can impact health. It has been rewarding to apply what we learn in the classroom in a real-world setting.”

Program participant Pattie Hunt said the classes have inspired her to make lifestyle changes and increased her awareness of factors that can contribute to diabetes, including stress and traumatic experiences. She and her grandson now take regular walks together, and she pays closer attention to nutrition and portion sizes.

As DEMAC enters its sixth year, Webber said the program continues to open doors for GWU students while expanding resources to local residents. 鈥淲e are more productive together as a team and not working in a silo,鈥 she shared. 鈥淲e are better together. This partnership allows the students to have hands-on experience and additional training on what to expect before completing their degree. Having GWU in the community is valuable to the school and the community.”

Teaching Excellence Award Recipient Dr. Paula Qualls Challenges Community to 鈥楥ultivate Good Soil鈥 While University Honors Top Students and Scholars

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擳he 秀色短视频-Webb University community celebrated the formal opening of the academic year with Fall Convocation on Aug. 19. Led by Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Nicole Waters, the program celebrated scholastic achievement, recognized scholarship recipients and featured remarks by Professor of Religious Studies Dr. Paula Qualls, the 2025 recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award.

Dr. Nicole Waters

After the invocation by Vice President for Christian Life and Service and University Chaplain Dr. Josh Parrott, Waters opened the ceremony by introducing the deans of the College of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Robert Prickett; Godbold College of Business, Dr. Mischia Taylor; College of Education, Dr. Prince Bull; and College of Health Sciences, Dr. Tracy Arnold. After the introductions, Waters noted. 鈥淭ogether, these colleges represent the breadth and depth of our university鈥檚 academic life. Their faculty will teach you, mentor you, and model what it means to live out your calling. May your time within these colleges spark curiosity, inspire innovation, and guide you in using your God-given talents to serve a greater purpose.鈥

秀色短视频-Webb President Nate Evans introduced Qualls, who also won the Excellence in Teaching Award in 2008. The recognition represents the highest honor bestowed upon a 秀色短视频-Webb faculty member and is especially meaningful because it reflects the voices of both colleagues and students.

Qualls has served 秀色短视频-Webb for 26 years. 鈥淗er students describe her with words such as compassionate, encouraging, positive and inspiring,鈥 Evans shared. 鈥淭hey speak of a professor who makes difficult material meaningful, creates a welcoming environment for learning, and takes the time to know and care for each student as an individual. Perhaps the greatest testament to her work, however, is found in the students who describe themselves as changed by her influence鈥攏ot only as learners, but as people.鈥

Paula Qualls Fall Convocation copy
Dr. Paula Qualls

Qualls began her speech by reflecting on memorable teachers portrayed in films such as 鈥淒ead Poets Society,鈥 鈥淢r. Holland’s Opus,鈥 and 鈥淪chool of Rock,鈥 noting that great teachers recognize potential, inspire growth, and help students become their best selves. She said these stories resonate because impactful teachers communicate a powerful message to their students: 鈥淵ou have value. You have potential. I believe in you. You matter.鈥 Qualls then connected those examples to what she described as the greatest teacher of all, Jesus Christ, whose teachings have transformed countless lives throughout history and continue to challenge people to change how they think, live, and serve others.

Using Jesus’ Parable of the Sower from Matthew 13, Qualls urged members of the 秀色短视频-Webb community to nurture their spiritual, intellectual, physical, and social well-being through prayer, learning, healthy habits, and meaningful relationships. She reminded students that a new academic year offers an opportunity for a fresh start and challenged them to make the most of their time and potential. 鈥淲e can all cultivate good soil and be transformed,鈥 she noted. 鈥淲e can make choices to have a good year, to make every day count. Carpe Diem… Seize the day, friends. Make your lives extraordinary. Cultivate good soil. Run the risk, and gain everything!鈥

After Qualls’ address, members of the University Concert Choir, directed by Associate Professor of Music Dr. Joshua Cheney, led the audience in singing the 秀色短视频-Webb alma mater. The convocation also highlighted 秀色短视频-Webb’s commitment to academic excellence, Christian faith, and student integrity. The ceremony opened with an invocation by Dr. Josh Parrott, vice president for Christian Life and Service and University chaplain, and included the presentation of the University’s Honor Code by Student Body President Bethany Durham. Academic achievement was recognized by Waters through the presentation of Scholastic Academic Awards, which honor students with the highest GPAs after one, two and three years of study, while Evans recognized recipients of 秀色短视频-Webb’s premier scholarships.

Curriculum Prepares Students to Create Lasting Change by Understanding the Relationships Behind Life’s Challenges

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擶hen individuals struggle with anxiety, conflict, addiction, or other mental health challenges, the issue often extends beyond a single person. Relationships, family dynamics, and broader support systems can all play a significant role. 秀色短视频-Webb University’s Marriage, Couples, and Family Counseling (MCFC) concentration helps future counselors understand those connections and equips them to provide specialized care through a systemic, relationship-centered approach.

Dr. Lorell Gordon, associate professor of psychological science and counselor education, is the practicum and internship coordinator for Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Since joining 秀色短视频-Webb in 2018, she has helped develop and grow the MCFC concentration. Drawing on her extensive background in both Clinical Mental Health Counseling and Marriage and Family Therapy, Gordon worked alongside colleagues to bring the idea to life.

The concentration allows students in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program to gain specialized knowledge and skills focused on working with couples and families. They complete additional coursework beyond the standard curriculum, including advanced marriage and family counseling theories and skills-based courses centered on practical application.

鈥淎 marriage and family therapist is not going to see the client in the room as an individual but understanding the client in the context of their relationships, patterns, and roles; basically the larger emotional system they are embedded in,鈥 Gordon explained. 鈥淪o, whether it’s the family of origin, the family they grew up in, the family that they’re with now, just seeing them as part of a system and not individually.鈥

Having information about the family dynamics can be critical when navigating long-term concerns. 鈥淵ou can address the anxiety, but without changes in the surrounding relational system, those gains are unlikely to be sustainable,鈥 Gordon noted.

Marriage Family counseling gordon
Dr. Lorell Gordon, second from left, and the class members role play a family counseling session.

Seeking a deeper understanding of these relationship patterns, Craig White Jr. added the MCFC concentration to his Mental Health Counseling degree. He plans to graduate in 2028. 鈥淭his concentration has expanded my clinical conceptualization by helping me recognize family structures, coalitions, communication styles, attachment patterns, and systemic influences that affect individuals throughout their lives,鈥 he reflected.

Learning goes beyond textbooks and lectures. A signature feature of the concentration is an immersive week-long experience that allows students to practice counseling techniques through detailed role-play scenarios.

During the intensive, students create complex family scenarios, assume various family-member roles, and rotate through the positions of counselor, client, and observer. The exercises provide an opportunity to apply theory in real-time while receiving feedback from faculty and peers.

鈥淭hey spend an entire week actually implementing the theories and skills learned during the theories courses,鈥 Gordon described. 鈥淭o see the role play unfold within the classroom helps them to really understand it better.鈥

White said the academic and experiential components have played a major role in his growth as a counselor. 鈥淭he coursework has significantly strengthened my clinical development,鈥 he observed. 鈥淭he intensive role-play experiences provided realistic opportunities to experience counseling from both the counselor’s and client’s perspectives. Those experiences reinforced the importance of empathy, active listening, clinical presence, and maintaining a client-centered approach where the client’s goals remain the focus of treatment.鈥

Another student who has benefited from the concentration is Elise Davis, who plans to graduate in 2028. Davis initially entered the counseling profession after realizing she wanted a career focused on advocacy and compassionate care.

elise davis mcfc
Elise Davis

Her journey to 秀色短视频-Webb began hundreds of miles away in Texas. After earning her undergraduate degree at Texas A&M University, she knew she wanted to pursue graduate studies in the Carolinas.

“I was looking for a clinical mental health program that balanced a strong clinical focus with a commitment to faith, as well as a supportive Christian community,” Davis said. “I researched several programs throughout North and South Carolina, and 秀色短视频-Webb had everything I was looking for.”

Enrolling in the program, she began classes in the MCFC concentration out of curiosity. 鈥淎t the beginning, I knew very little about what it meant to be a counselor, let alone how to treat a family or couple in a counseling setting,鈥 Davis recalled. 鈥淚 found it not only manageable but incredibly helpful to complete the MCFC in my first year of the program. The MCFC concentration not only allowed me a more nuanced understanding of certain theories, but it also boosted my confidence in applying those theories with clients.鈥

Davis also points to the intensive role-play experiences as one of the program’s greatest strengths. She noted that Gordon provided real-time feedback and advice, which helped to grow her confidence as a student and prospective counselor.

Beyond classroom learning, Davis discovered another unexpected benefit: relationships with fellow students. 鈥淚 was surprised by the networking that came with doing this concentration,鈥 she shared. 鈥淭he MCFC allows cohorts to mix, and I was able to take classes with third-year students in my first year in the program. These third-year students became fantastic resources and unexpected friends.鈥

Graduates of the concentration have the opportunity to pursue licensure as a marriage and family therapist. However, Davis said that the information is beneficial even if a student decides later not to work with families or couples.

White agreed and added, 鈥淭his concentration equips future counselors with the knowledge and clinical skills needed to approach clients with empathy, systemic awareness, and cultural humility while helping individuals and families create healthier patterns of communication, emotional functioning, and relationships.鈥

Aiden Lail mcfc
Aiden Lail

Understanding clients within the broader context of their relationships and support systems also resonates with Aiden Lail, who expects to graduate in December 2026. His interest in pursuing the concentration grew from his experience working with children and families. 鈥淚 have seen firsthand how imperative the family is to an individual either healing or not,鈥 Lail reflected.

He offered examples of how the training benefits counselors regardless of their future specialty area. 鈥淚f you are working with kids, you will be working heavily with the family,鈥 Lail pointed out. 鈥淚f you are working with someone with a substance-use disorder, you will need to identify supports and the context the individual is using. No client exists in a vacuum. The courses have allowed me to identify behaviors in the context of a family/community system and have increased my holistic view of each client.鈥

Through its blend of specialized coursework and experiential learning, the MCFC concentration equips future counselors to understand the broader systems affecting their clients. As interest in the concentration continues to grow, graduates are already applying their training in the field, including one alumna who now serves as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Associate.

With a growing number of students pursuing the concentration and additional declarations anticipated this fall, Gordon sees a bright future for the program as it prepares counselors to help individuals, couples, and families build healthier, more sustainable relationships.

Alumnus and National Security Expert Patrick Woody Challenges Graduates to Stay 鈥楩IRED鈥 for Lifelong Growth and Service

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥斝闵淌悠-Webb University celebrated the achievements of over 500 graduates on May 8 in Lutz-Yelton Convocation Center. Traditional undergraduate students were honored at 9 a.m., with graduates from master鈥檚 and doctoral programs recognized at 2 p.m.

TUG Commencement

Each ceremony began with the ringing of a replica of the Liberty Bell. As America celebrates the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence this year, it is interesting to note the significance of this bell, which is used to begin all 秀色短视频-Webb Commencement services, convocations and special assemblies. The bell was first rung in the fall of 1970 to inaugurate 秀色短视频-Webb鈥檚 first year as a senior college. The replica weighs 44 pounds and stands 15 inches high. It is one of a limited edition of 2,400 bells produced to mark the bicentenary of American Independence (1776-1976)鈥攐ne for each month of the 200 years.

秀色短视频-Webb President Nate Evans welcomed graduates and their guests to begin both ceremonies. He recognized the accomplishments of the students and thanked parents, spouses, friends, and loved ones who supported them along the way. He also expressed gratitude for the 秀色短视频-Webb faculty and staff for teaching, guiding, and mentoring students to achieve their goals.

Each commencement program also included remarks and greetings from GWU Chair of the Board of Trustees the Rev. Dr. M. Lamont Littlejohn Jr. He congratulated their success and challenged them to carry the values that define 秀色短视频-Webb with them鈥攖o live 鈥淧ro Deo et Humanitate,鈥 for God and Humanity.

TUG Commencement

During the undergraduate ceremony, Student Body President Andrea Stampone addressed her classmates, reflecting on the defining role of kindness and community in the 秀色短视频鈥慦ebb experience.

鈥淢y charge to you today is to carry this kindness into all walks of life that you may enter,鈥 Stampone stated. 鈥淭reat people with kindness. Be a person who needs people. Be someone that runs to others when they need people, because these things make you a lucky person. Care deeply. Listen carefully. Love loudly. So go out into the world, and make that community special. Because it鈥檚 not that being a part of something special makes you special, but instead that something is special because you are a part of it.鈥

The featured speaker for both commencement ceremonies was Patrick Woody, a 秀色短视频鈥慦ebb 2003 alumnus and former student body president. He is founder and CEO of Point of Warning, a consulting firm that provides risk, intelligence, public policy, and organizational improvement services to government, private sector, and nonprofit organizations.

A cybersecurity professional with experience across the U.S. Intelligence Community鈥攊ncluding the CIA, Department of Homeland Security, and National Counterterrorism Center鈥擶oody directly advised multiple U.S. Presidents, White House leadership, Cabinet officials, and Congress on critical national security issues.

Woody received a Bachelor of Arts in history at 秀色短视频-Webb. He has a Master of Arts degree in international relations and comparative politics from George Mason University and doctoral work in international relations at the University of Maryland.

He shared that his speech included advice that he wished someone had given him when he graduated 23 years ago. 鈥淚鈥檓 going to talk to you about getting fired,鈥 Woody explained. 鈥淣ot from a job or a career, but from a mindset. It鈥檚 getting fired from the comfort of thinking that because you鈥檝e achieved this milestone, you鈥檝e arrived and there鈥檚 no more work to be done. I want to talk about a different way of looking at the future and your post-graduate life鈥攐ne built around five principles that spell out the word 鈥楩-I-R-E-D.鈥 If you leave today with these principles, I promise you that the next chapters of your life will be the best ones.鈥

TUG Commencement copy

Woody described each guiding idea and closed with a short summary. 鈥淔ail鈥攁nd let it teach you,鈥 he reiterated. 鈥淚nvest鈥攊n yourself, your future, and others. Reflect鈥攕o that you are steering and not just speeding. Educate yourself鈥攁lways, relentlessly, joyfully. Dialogue鈥攁cross every divide you encounter. Being 鈥楩IRED鈥 is not a setback. It is a posture. It is how you walk into every meeting, every relationship, every new chapter of your life鈥攚ith humility, with purpose, and with the courage to keep growing.鈥

Beyond the commencement addresses, the ceremonies also featured special presentations and awards recognizing excellence, service, and remembrance within the 秀色短视频鈥慦ebb community.

Posthumous Degree Presentation

Before undergraduate students walked across the stage to receive individual recognition for their accomplishments, Evans took a moment to remember Isaiah Hughes, a valued member of the campus community whose academic journey was tragically cut short. Hughes was an accomplished student in the Godbold College of Business and destined for great success. Evans invited the Hughes family to join him on stage, and he conferred the Bachelor of Science degree in management information systems posthumously upon Isaiah Hughes.

Undergraduate Awards and Distinctions

During the morning ceremony, several awards were presented to recognize graduates for their exceptional achievements. Senior Scholastic Awards, were presented to the members of the graduating class who earned the highest grade point average during their terms of university study. The winners were:

  • Corrie Danielle Cloninger, Bachelor of Science in nursing.
  • Sara-Michael Jann, Bachelor of Science in biology.
  • Kaylee Faith Maynor, Bachelor of Science in nursing.
  • Madison Elizabeth Peek, Bachelor of Science in nursing.
  • Ava Vaughn Stratman, Bachelor of Science in exercise science.

The Most Outstanding Male and Female Graduate Awards were given to the members of the graduating class, who, judged by the faculty, best exemplify the qualities of leadership, citizenship and academic excellence.

  • Kayla Warren Griffin, Bachelor of Science in accounting.
  • Jennifer Abernathy Ruckman, Bachelor of Science in accounting.

Graduate Scholarship and Research Recognition

The afternoon ceremony featured the presentation of the Darlene J. Gravett Citizen Scholar Award, which recognizes graduate research with the potential to make a meaningful contribution to the improvement of society.

Dr. Sydney Brown, assistant provost of Academic Systems and Graduate Studies, presented the award to this year鈥檚 recipient, Dr. Brittany Hudgins-Graham. Brown noted that Hudgins-Graham exemplifies the purpose of the award in a powerful and timely way. Her work, 鈥淔orest Therapy for Mental Balance: A Christian Community Approach,鈥 brings together mental health, community, and faith to address a growing need in our world today.

鈥淲hat makes this project especially compelling is its focus on practice鈥攃reating accessible, community-based approaches that support well-being in real and tangible ways,鈥 Brown observed. 鈥淗er work reminds us that research is not only about understanding problems, but about responding to them with care, creativity, and purpose. Dr. Hudgins-Graham鈥檚 work reflects the very spirit of this award鈥攕cholarship that serves others and strengthens communities.鈥

Honors Scholars Gain Experience Presenting Research Beyond the Classroom

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥斝闵淌悠-Webb University Honors Program students recently showcased their scholarship at the Southern Regional Honors Conference (SRHC), held in Montgomery, Ala. The annual conference brought together over 700 high-achieving students, along with faculty, and administrators from across the southern United States for three days of research presentations, workshops, and networking opportunities. More than 300 students and faculty shared their research through posters or podium presentations at the event.

鈥淗onors is more than coursework and thesis publications,鈥 noted Director of University Honors and Assistant Professor of Physics Dr. Wilson Hawkins. 鈥淭hrough conference travel our students build research projects, present to their peers, and network with other universities. Stepping out of your comfort zone, exploring new places, meeting new people, and building your resume is what it鈥檚 all about! I couldn鈥檛 be more proud of our students!鈥

Hosted by the Southern Regional Honors Council, the conference serves honors programs in 11 states and is the council鈥檚 signature event. The conference is distinctive in its student-centered focus, featuring original research and creative work across disciplines including STEM, social sciences, business, humanities, and the arts.

On the first day of the conference, the students toured Montgomery and learned about the historic city through a four-hour walking program called, 鈥淐ity as Text.鈥 They were guided through confederate and slave trade monuments, slave trade river ports, museums, etc. This included the Rosa Parks memorial, the Rosa Parks Museum, the first Confederate States of America Capital monuments and buildings, and The Legacy Museum.

The 秀色短视频-Webb Honors Students took a walking tour of Montgomery, Ala.

On the second and third days, students attended the Graduate School Fair to network and learn about the programs offered at several graduate schools. Also on these days, students presented their research.

Among the student presenters was Abigail Lauerman of Fort Mill, S.C. A junior double majoring in psychology and theatre, she presented her poster, 鈥淐reative Pathways to Mental Health: The Importance of Music and Art Therapy.鈥 Lauerman鈥檚 research examined how these therapies can improve emotional resilience, reduce anxiety, and support overall mental health across different populations.

鈥淚 chose my research topic, because I am very interested in mental health and creative ways to support emotional well-being,鈥 Lauerman related. 鈥淎s someone who hopes to work with children as a child life specialist, I was especially drawn to music and art therapy because they offer nonverbal ways for individuals to express themselves.鈥

Lauerman said the opportunities she鈥檚 experienced in the 秀色短视频-Webb Honors Program played a key role in preparing her to present at the academic conference. 鈥淏eing in the Honors Program has allowed me to challenge myself academically and grow as a student,鈥 she asserted. 鈥淧resenting my research helped me build confidence in public speaking, improve my communication skills, and connect with others who share similar academic interests.鈥

She also reflected on the supportive environment at 秀色短视频-Webb and her involvement in the Honors Program. 鈥淢y experience at 秀色短视频-Webb and in the Honors Program has been very rewarding,鈥 Lauerman said. 鈥淭he conference was a great opportunity to showcase my work and gain a deeper appreciation for the research process. I鈥檝e felt encouraged to step outside of my comfort zone, and I鈥檝e really enjoyed serving as the publicist for the Honors Program.鈥

Hannah White, a junior chemistry major from Bluefield, Va., presented 鈥淴-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometry as a Non-Destructive Analysis Method of American Artifacts.鈥 Her research examined how X-ray fluorescence spectrometry can identify the elemental composition of artifacts, such as arrowheads, without damaging them.

鈥淧reservation of artifacts and forensic evidence is important,鈥 White explained. 鈥淴-ray fluorescence spectrometry is a non-destructive method of analysis. I chose this topic because I am interested in forensic science and new ideas for how to preserve evidence collected at crime scenes.鈥

She added that her project strengthened her interest in forensic science and future research. White said she values the professional experience and networking opportunities gained through participating in the Honors Conference.

Bella Harding Honors Conference
Bella Harding presented her research on Morphea Skin
Disease.

Another chemistry student, Taylor Sollie, a junior from Waynesville, N.C., presented 鈥淓xploration of Infrared Spectroscopy as a Potential Method to Identify Trace Evidence as Nail Polish.鈥 Sollie, who is majoring in chemistry with minors in biology and forensic science, tested infrared spectroscopy as a tool for identifying paint samples found at crime scenes.

鈥淚 chose this topic because I want to be a forensic chemist,鈥 she stated. 鈥淚 learned that the 16 nail polishes I tested鈥攁 variety of brands and kinds鈥攑roduced almost the exact same spectra. This showed that if an unknown paint chip is found, it can easily be identified as nail polish because it has a distinct spectrum.鈥

Emmy Bowen, a junior psychology and sociology major from Boiling Springs, presented research titled 鈥淐hildren and Divorce: What You Should Know.鈥 Her work focused on the psychological and sociological effects of post-divorce environments on children and highlighted potential interventions to support well-being.

鈥淭his topic doesn鈥檛 have a lot of research, even though a huge portion of the U.S. population is affected by it,鈥 Bowen observed. 鈥淚 wanted people to know about interventions and things that could possibly help children through a difficult time.鈥

Hodges McCeathern honors
Hodges McCathern was invited to share his research in
a podium presentation.

In the STEM and health sciences category, Hodges McCathern, a junior biochemistry major from Lexington, S.C., presented research connected to his honors thesis titled 鈥淓nvironmental Fate of DDT and Implications for Neurological Health.鈥 His work explores a potential link between exposure to DDT鈥攁 pesticide widely used during World War II鈥攁nd increased risk of Parkinson鈥檚 disease.

鈥淢y hope is that my research can help raise awareness about this issue and promote further study into the long-term effects of DDT and the causes of Parkinson鈥檚 disease,鈥 McCathern said.

Reflecting on his experience in Honors, he added, 鈥淭hrough the Honors Program, I have presented research at conferences from coast to coast. Getting to interact with people who are as passionate about their research as I am has been eye-opening and has helped me become more confident as I begin applying to medical school.鈥

By presenting research beyond the classroom, 秀色短视频鈥慦ebb Honors students gained hands鈥憃n experience that complements their academic studies and reflects the University鈥檚 mission to equip students with the knowledge, confidence, and purpose needed to lead and serve in a rapidly changing world.
