How will we pay for college? It is one of the biggest questions students and families bring to the college search. Understanding the costs, the financial aid available and the steps to apply can help you build a plan with greater confidence.

At 秀色短视频-Webb University, there is more than one path to making a private, Christian education more affordable. Scholarships, grants and other financial assistance can help reduce your costs as you prepare for your future.

Use this guide to understand your options, ask the right questions and take your next steps.

1. Understand the Total Cost of College

Tuition is only one part of your college budget. You will also need to plan for fees, housing, meals, books, transportation and personal expenses.

Two terms can help you compare your options:

  • Cost of attendance: The estimated cost of attending a college, including charges billed by the university and other educational and living expenses.
  • Net price: Your cost of attendance minus scholarships and grants. Loans help finance the remaining cost, but they do not reduce your net price.

A college鈥檚 published tuition does not tell you what your family will pay after scholarships and grants. Compare your estimated net price, then revisit that estimate when you receive your official financial aid offer.

Start with 秀色短视频-Webb鈥檚 Net Price Calculator. Treat the result as an estimate, and ask the Office of Financial Planning how current programs and your individual circumstances may affect your actual offer.

2. Explore Scholarships and Grants First

Scholarships and grants generally do not have to be repaid. Scholarships may recognize academic achievement, talent, leadership or other qualifications, while many grants are based on financial need.

The Open Door Guarantee: Free Tuition for Eligible Students

Beginning Fall 2027, The Open Door Guarantee covers standard full-time Traditional Undergraduate tuition and mandatory university fees for eligible new first-time freshmen and transfer students with a family income of $100,000 or less, as determined through the FAFSA.

Students must pursue their first bachelor鈥檚 degree, enroll full time, live on campus and meet all program requirements. Students receiving a 秀色短视频-Webb athletic scholarship are not eligible.

Applicable scholarships and grants are applied first. 秀色短视频-Webb provides additional institutional funding if needed to cover the remaining eligible tuition and mandatory fees. Loans are not used to fulfill the Guarantee.

Housing, meals, books, transportation, personal expenses and course- or program-specific fees are not covered. Include these expenses in your family鈥檚 budget.

No separate Guarantee application is required. Apply to 秀色短视频-Webb and complete the 2027鈥2028 FAFSA by March 1, 2027, for priority consideration. Submit all requested financial aid documentation promptly.

Merit Scholarships: Recognition for Your Academic Achievement

Eligible first-time freshmen with a weighted high school GPA of 3.5 or higher may qualify for a merit scholarship equal to 50% of tuition. 秀色短视频-Webb also considers transfer students for merit scholarships using cumulative college GPA.

Additional Scholarship Opportunities

秀色短视频-Webb offers competitive scholarships, including the Tucker Scholarship, Ignite Excellence and the Godbold Business Scholarship, along with opportunities connected to music, athletics, faith, service and other qualifications. Eligible transfer students may also qualify for housing or commuter assistance.

Some awards are considered at admission; others require a separate application, audition or interview. Check current requirements, deadlines and renewal conditions on the Scholarships and Grants page. Ask how awards work together before adding them into your budget.

3. Complete the FAFSA

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, helps determine eligibility for federal student aid and is also used by states and colleges to award financial assistance. Completing it is free.

Submit the FAFSA for the academic year you plan to attend college and include 秀色短视频-Webb鈥檚 school code: 002929. Complete a new FAFSA each year to continue being considered for aid.

Do not assume your family鈥檚 income makes completing the form unnecessary. Different types of aid have different eligibility requirements.

Check school, state and federal deadlines, and work toward the earliest deadline that applies to you. The Open Door Guarantee has its own priority date, so do not wait for a later general financial aid deadline.

4. Look for Outside Scholarships

Your high school counselor, local foundations, community organizations, churches and employers can be good places to ask about scholarships. Keep a list of deadlines, required essays and supporting documents so you can apply on time.

Tell 秀色短视频-Webb about any outside awards you receive. Scholarship restrictions and financial aid rules affect how funds can be used. If you qualify for Open Door, ask whether an outside scholarship can help with housing, meals or other expenses beyond tuition.

5. Read Your Financial Aid Offer Carefully

When your offer arrives, identify what you have been awarded and what you would need to borrow or earn.

Type of assistanceWhat it means for your budget
Scholarships and grantsGenerally do not require repayment; check eligibility and renewal conditions.
Student loansBorrowed money that must be repaid, generally with interest.
Federal Work-StudyAn opportunity for eligible students to earn money through part-time work. Earnings depend on securing a job and working hours.

Compare colleges using the same costs and time period. A larger total aid offer does not automatically mean a lower cost if much of that offer consists of loans.

Ask these questions before making your decision:

  • What will we owe after scholarships and grants?
  • Which expenses will be billed by the university, and which should we budget for separately?
  • Are awards renewable, and what must I do to keep them?
  • Does this offer cover one semester or a full academic year?
  • How much borrowing would be needed each year?

If you consider a loan, review its interest rate, fees, repayment terms and who is responsible for repayment.

6. Make a Plan for Remaining Expenses

Once you understand your remaining costs, discuss how savings, family contributions, earnings and other resources might fit together. Ask about 秀色短视频-Webb鈥檚 payment plans and review current terms, fees and payment dates. A payment plan changes when you pay; it does not reduce the amount owed.

If your family鈥檚 financial circumstances have changed, contact the Office of Financial Planning to ask whether a review is appropriate and what documentation is needed.

Online and graduate students should explore assistance for their specific programs. Scholarship and financial aid eligibility varies by student type, and The Open Door Guarantee applies to eligible Traditional Undergraduate students.

Take the Next Step Toward Your Future

Paying for college starts with understanding your options. Apply, complete the FAFSA, explore scholarships and ask for help reviewing your offer. A clear plan can help you focus on the education, experiences and opportunities that will help you become more.

Scholarship and financial aid eligibility, award amounts and program terms are subject to change. Consult the linked program pages and your official financial aid offer for current details.

Lower Your Stress Level in as Little as One Minute

    Written by Dr. Sharon Webb

Weary from stress and multiple emotions experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic, many people are looking forward to the holidays. However, Christmas celebrations will probably look different this year as families strive to keep everyone healthy.

Changing traditions could lead to more feelings of anxiety. Let鈥檚 look at some helpful coping mechanisms, which may reduce the negative impact of stress and anxiety.

Dr. Sharon Webb in her office
    Dr. Sharon Webb

Perception is key as we anticipate a potential stressful experience this upcoming holiday season. It is often not just one thing, but it is a combination of things that 鈥減ileup鈥 to impact our ability to cope in healthy ways. In addition to 鈥渘ormally鈥 expected stress from Christmas shopping, additional event planning, and possibly traveling, the uncertainties of COVID-19 implications on health and holiday events may elevate levels of stress and anxiety.

Anything learned can be unlearned. Thus, ineffective thoughts and behaviors for dealing with stress and anxiety can be replaced with learned healthy strategies. We can retrain our brains to think positively鈥攃ognitively process things in a different way, which will influence how we respond to changes and uncertainties during this Christmas season.

In addition to perception, it is also important to have realistic expectations, recognizing what we can and cannot control. We often create or exacerbate our experience of stress from unrealistic expectations and demands we place on ourselves. I encourage you to offer yourself the same grace you would offer to others who are navigating the holidays through these uncertain times.

Getting enough rest, exercise, and proper nutrition are commonly known to help decrease feelings of stress, but there are additional tools that can be added to our daily routines to minimize stress and anxiety (i.e. prayer, meditation, yoga, mindfulness exercises, etc.) A common excuse for not practicing wellness is, 鈥渘ot enough time,鈥 but following are some ideas for how to manage stress in healthy ways within small amounts of time:

A GWU student pets Roebuck, the GWU Bulldog.
    • One minute (stretching, grounding exercises, petting a dog or cat)
    • Five minutes (breathing exercises, journaling)
    • Fifteen minutes (chatting with a supportive friend or family member)
    • Thirty minutes (reading a book, watching a funny TV show, taking a walk, exercising)

If self-identified stress is mild to moderate, practicing any of the above strategies can help you to successfully cope and overcome feelings of stress and anxiety. If you believe stress to be at a moderate to severe level, outside help may be needed. In some cases, professional intervention may be necessary through therapy and/or medication. You can contact our GWU Counseling Center at (704) 406-4563 for a direct appointment or for referral sources.

    Merry Christmas!

Dr. Sharon Webb is an associate professor of the 秀色短视频-Webb School of Psychological Science and Counselor. She is coordinator of Clinical Mental Health Counseling Programs for the Main Campus and Charlotte Center. She received her bachelor鈥檚, master鈥檚 and educational specialist degrees from 秀色短视频-Webb and her doctorate from Walden University in Minneapolis, Minn. Living on campus is an incredible experience, but only if you come prepared! Use this list to get started, and consult the Guide to Residential Living for all the details.

    Housing Checklist

    Bring

    • Decorations: Posters, signs, banners, Polaroids, and artwork can all make your dorm feel a bit more like home.
      • Pro-Tip: Record players sound great and give your room a retro vibe.
    • Entertainment: Your TV, gaming console, and Blu-ray player are all great additions to your dorm or apartment, as well as board games and card decks for those rare moments when you aren鈥檛 watching Netflix.
      • Pro-Tip: Don鈥檛 forget a power strip.
    • Your 鈥楢dulting鈥 list: trash can, broom, shower caddy, shower flip flops, towels, toiletries, laundry basket, flashlight, umbrella, study lamp, fan, microwave, mini-fridge
      • Pro Tip: A Keurig goes a long way if you have morning classes on your schedule.

    Don鈥檛 Bring

Save yourself the trouble and leave the following items at home: pets, extension cords, heaters/ac units, weapons, hot plates, deep fryers, candles and other flammable aromatics, grills, etc.

For a complete breakdown of prohibited items and practices:

    Additional Resources

MicroFridge: An energy efficient refrigerator/freezer/microwave unit available to 秀色短视频-Webb students for rent or purchase through the  website.

Linens Program: We want to make sure every student has the right  for move-in. Guaranteed to last until graduation, our wide selection of custom-sized linens is certain to fit every bed on campus. We also provide a variety of other residence hall room must haves, including  and anything else you will need.

    Roommate Tips

    • Get in touch with your roommate prior to check in if possible. Talk about your living space preferences and consult our housing checklist to consolidate potentially shared items (TV, trashcan, etc.).
    • Share schedules to identify and address any potential conflicts before they happen.
    • Be honest about behavior that bothers you, and make your expectations clear.
    • Give yourself and your roommate space by making a point to spend some non-class occupied time away from your room.
    • Find a mutually acceptable level of room cleanliness.

    Student Activities

Student Activities helps ensure your college experience is fun and memorable by hosting great events throughout the year. Don鈥檛 miss these student favorites:

    The Legendary Pancake Bingo Night

This night, held during the week of finals, is great as an excuse to put off studying for a few hours and eat too many pancakes. The addition of campus-wide bingo with prizes on the line (emceed by our Chief of Police and his corny jokes) is what makes it legendary.

Free Movies, Bowling, and Laser Tag Night at the Big-E

It鈥檚 all there in the title (some of you didn鈥檛 need to read past 鈥榝ree鈥).

    Spring Formal

Dress up and dance the night away in a decked out, lit-up, and extremely loud Tucker Student Center.

    Last Blast End-of-Year Celebration

Send off the school year right with a special meal from the Caf staff, served on the quad block party style with lawn games, waterslides, and maybe some live music.

    Movies on the Quad

Like a drive-in theater without the cars. You bring the blankets, and we鈥檒l supply the popcorn, projector screen, and cinematic masterpiece.

    Technology Services

Our Technology Services Department is your on-campus resource for issues related to network connectivity, academic technology, and hardware/software procurement. Each campus residence has a designated student technician (Res Tech) to assist with technology issues specific to their assigned dorm or apartment.

A huge part of the educational experience at GWU is learning what it means to love God and be a loving neighbor in your community and beyond. Check out the resources available to help you ignite your faith.

The Office of Christian Life and Service

The Office of Christian Life and Service provides you with resources and programming to ignite your faith by offering pastoral counseling, coordinating mission trips, and enhancing student ministries. Department staff support the campus through prayer and teaching throughout the year at student ministries and campus events.

That鈥檚 what college is all about: figuring out what you want to do and who you want to be, and when everyone around you is pointing you towards Christ, it鈥檚 a lot easier to be focused on Him.Caitlyn 鈥16, American Sign Language

    Student Ministries

Student Ministries are an important and sustaining part of 秀色短视频-Webb鈥檚 faith community. Students lead and coordinate The Gathering, a weekly campus wide worship service, and F.O.C.U.S. (Fellowship of Christians United in Service) teams that volunteer with local churches. Other ministries include FCA, men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 small group, gospel choir, Prison Fellowship, and more.

    Dimensions

Throughout the academic year, 秀色短视频-Webb invites guest speakers from religious, academic, and professional backgrounds to address important topics in faith and culture. Past speakers include NASA leadership development trainer Ronnie Doss, folk music duo Jenny & Tyler, and Carolina Panthers legend John Kasay.
